Extenuating Circumstances (EC) claims are generally for short-term, acute issues.
If you have a chronic or ongoing condition, this should be managed through a support plan or voluntary interruption of study (in cases of acute attacks).
If you already have a support plan, then sometimes an acute flare up that is beyond the remit of the support plan may be covered by an EC. Seek advice from Student Services or your School to determine the right route.
If you are seeking an extension, have a go with this coursework decision tool will help you identify which is the appropriate route to take between ECs and Support Plan extensions (also known as CERFs).
If you continue to be affected by the same issue or experience a recurrence, consult a medical or professional advisor.
Where your circumstances become ongoing or chronic, you are encouraged to refer to the regulation on ‘Long-Term Conditions or Disabilities Affecting the Ability to Study and/or Comply with Assessment Requirements’. This may lead to support such as a formal support plan or individual arrangements for examinations or to voluntarily interrupt your studies.
